PALMS: ETHNOBOTANY AND ECOLOGY OF ARECACEAE

PALMS: Palm Harvest Impacts in Tropical Forests

My PhD thesis within the EU FP7 PALMS Project (www.fp7-palms.org) sought to understand the ecosystem services that palms (Arecaceae) provide to local people in northwestern South America. Over one thousand ethnobotanical interviews were gathered with 28 Amerindian and non-Amerindian groups during 18-months of fieldwork in Colombia, Ecuador, and Bolivia in the Amazon, Andes and Chocó ecoregions. This resulted in 6 papers in peer-reviewed journals, one book co-authored with indigenous communities, 5 co-authored book chapters, the collection of 200+ palm specimens, and 10 talks at international conferences.
